OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.5, a new model designed to bridge the gap between chatbots and autonomous software, amid stiff competition in frontier AI and with markets reacting to the timing of its release.
OpenAI has released GPT-5.5, a model that appears to narrow the gap between chatbots and software that can carry out longer, more autonomous tasks. The announcement also closed out a prediction-market question over timing, with contracts betting on an April 23 release moving to 100% YES after the launch, according to CryptoBriefing.
In OpenAI's framing, GPT-5.5 is its most capable system so far, with strengths in coding, research, document creation, spreadsheet work and software navigation. The company said it is designed to reason over longer sequences of tasks more effectively while using fewer tokens than its predecessor, a combination that should make it faster and more efficient in practical use.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI's co-founder and president, told reporters that the model marked a step towards more "agentic" computing and what the company has described as a future super app. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI sees that direction as bringing ChatGPT, Codex and browser-style tools into a more unified product, while Brockman suggested more model improvements are likely to follow in relatively quick succession.
The release comes amid intensifying competition in frontier AI, with Axios noting that OpenAI moved soon after a comparable launch from Anthropic. OpenAI said GPT-5.5 is now available to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex, while API access is still to come. The company also said it has put the model through safety and preparedness testing, and that it is working with partners on the requirements for running it at scale.
The broader market reaction highlighted how quickly expectations around release timing can crystallise once a product announcement arrives. CryptoBriefing said trading volume across the relevant prediction markets reached $233,954 in daily actual USDC volume, and that the most notable move came just before the unveiling, when one of the contracts slipped slightly as traders adjusted positions ahead of the news.
